HCSO Sergeant killed by suspected drunk driver on North Shepherd

Harris County's drunk driving tragedy and carnage continues, this time the victim is a Harris County Sheriff's Office sergeant returning home after completing his shift.

The accident happened around 3:00 a.m. the morning of Sunday May 19th at the intersection of North Shepherd and West Little York. The sergeant's shift was over and he was heading home. The Houston Police Department told Channel 13 News that the sergeant was killed instantly when his pickup truck was t-boned by the suspected drunk driver. The suspected drunk driver is now in custody and HCSO has not yet released the deceased sergeant's name.

If a relief fund is established for the sergeant's family, please provide the details so I can include that information here. daragh@daraghcarterlaw.com

Update: The alleged drunk driver responsible for this accident has been identified as 22-year old Andres Munos-Munos. Munos-Munos has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. This is not his first drunk-driving charge: he was arrested to DWI on June 10, 2012, less than a year ago. The deceased deputy has not formerly been identified, but in comments to Channel 11's story readers have referred to him as Sergeant Polk.

Update 2: Dwayne Polk has been identified as the deputy killed in the accident.  Meanwhile Andres Munos-Munos had his first court appearance, see below.

Update 3: Sergeant Dwayne Polk's family spoke to the media today (May 22, 2013) about their loss. Sgt. Polk's family explained that he was a single father on his way home from a second job, and that he worked hard to support his children. Dwayne Polk's son is 10-years old.  I have a 7-year old son so I can appreciate how hard it has been (and will be) for Sgt. Polk's son to come to terms with his dad's passing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) say Munos-Munos is an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was deported in July, 2012, presumably after his first arrest in Harris County for drunk driving.  This is a prime example of type of disasters that unfold weekly in Harris County due to drunk drivers causing accidents.
