A wrecker driver helping a motorist whose car was stalled in the center lane of US 59 in Houston was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a suspected drunk driver. According to Channel 2, the driver was attempting to tow the disabled vehicle when a white pickup truck smashed into the rear of the stalled vehicle, pushing it into the back of the tow truck. The driver of the stalled vehicle was hurt in the collision, and the driver of the tow truck was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. If he/she was drunk, they will like be charged with intoxication manslaughter.

A comment by a person with the username Zak Bucklin to Channel 2's story indicates the deceased tow truck operator was both a husband and a father, making his death all the more tragic. The comment reads as follows:
As a friend and colleague of the man that was killed I want all of Houston to know the facts. There was another truck giving traffic control to both vehicles the trucks driver was drunk. The truck driver tried to swerve in between both tow trucks and hit our dear friend as he was trying to get the passenger out of the vehicle and into his tow truck out of harms way. Our mayor has cut back funding in the city and one of those programs is Safe Clear. We use to have officers working there that could dispatch calls directly over the air. Now we must call the non emergency line and "hope" the call taker puts the call as a high priority. We lost a dear friend but his family lost a father and husband! We wrecker drivers always get the bad rap but tell me this who is always first giving traffic control to HPD, HFD and most importantly the citizens of Houston. Think about that next time your flying down the highway and see one of us doing our job. We have wives and children we want to go home to. And put our lives on the line so you can see yours too!
