The Altima crashed head-on into a white Ford Focus with two people inside, after which 19-year old Freddie Ramirez crashed into the wrecked Focus and Altima. In an interview with KHOU, Freddy said that he and another driver pulled Camile Stanley from the wreckage and detected an obvious odor of alcohol. Stanley was taken to Ben Taub where she was treated for only minor injuries, then transported to Harris County Jail.
Update: the two victims of this drunk driving tragedy have been identified as a young couple from Kingwood, Texas. They are Emily Ann Preston (23) and her fiance, Kevin Andrew "Max" Douglass (23), pictured below. An article in the Humble Observer quotes Emily's father Lawrence Kuslich describing the young couple as inseparable: they had been together for two years, were looking forward to marriage and children and had just bought their first home together. Emily and Max were both working full-time and taking college courses to better themselves: they were on their way home from a college event when their Ford Focus was struck head-on by Camile Ermine Stanley's Nissan Altima, traveling the wrong way on the Beltway. A public funeral service was held for Emily and Max on April 20th, 2013 at Kingwood First Baptist Church.
Two lives have been cut short because of one person's selfish decision to drive drunk, and unfortunately history tells us this type of tragedy will be repeated numerous times in and around Harris County this year. While supporting anti-drunk driving causes like M.A.D.D. is good, something more immediate you can do is encourage responsible behavior in people you know, and remind them of stories like this.
