Two young men, ages 19 and 20, were critically injured in a single vehicle accident last night at the Aldine Mail Route exit ramp of the Eastex Freeway. Deputies say the vehicle left the freeway, hit a guardrail and went airborne before striking a pole. The men were trapped inside the vehicle for about 30 minutes before firefighters were able to get them out. The force of the impact completely dislodged the car's motor, leaving it on the freeway (see picture). One of the men was taken via life flight helicopter.
Channel 2's report identifies one of the men as having just graduated high school. The report also states there were two additional accidents at the scene subsequent to this one, apparently due to other motorists rubbernecking.
